Yay! We’re hosting an illustrator meetup in Germany this summer. Click here to read more!
Rasters are coming (finally)!!!!
I’m doing a serious happy dance tonight: Check out my latest post on iStock!
We’re happy to announce an upcoming project that’s very long overdue.
In the near future, we will be moving our existing JPEG illustrations from under their current categorization as ‘Photos’ to ‘Illustrations’. This includes any artwork that isn’t vector-based: Drawings, paintings, collages, digital paintings, and so on.
This has been a much-requested feature for a very long time and we’re thrilled that it will soon be coming to iStock.
We know there will be a lot of questions so we’ve prepared an initial FAQ. We will have more information once this project launches so please stay tuned.
Questions or comments? Please visit the Raster Illustration Discussion Thread. Thanks!
What will this mean for clients?
What will this mean for contributors?
What does this mean for existing JPEG illustrations classified as ‘Photos’?
What if my photos accidentally get moved into ‘Illustrations’?
What if I have JPEG illustrations but they didn’t get moved into ‘Illustrations’?
I upload 3D renders, does this mean my files will be moved too?
What I’ve been working on lately
I’d always wanted to tackle vintage line art, particularly lifestyle and fashion themes. After a lot of tinkering and experimenting I’ve finally come up with a style I’m fairly happy with. To start, I’ve created a series of generic people in various careers:
I’ve also been playing around with halftone fill patterns. I’ve tried various default swatches and the popular method of shading in Photoshop, then halftoning and autotracing the results but I wanted a slightly cleaner look. In the end I created my own moire pattern. It still needs a little work but I do prefer it to the usual halftone dot fills:

Today I drew some neon ‘Cocktail Lounge’ signs. I didn’t use any gradients: I did experiment a little with glows and blurs but didn’t like how bloated the file size got.

Today I went back to the random noun generator and ended up with ‘Panda’. So I created a super simple panda icon. I also managed to squeeze in some infographics.

Whew, past the halfway point. I’m finding it hard to sit down each night to work because I’m pretty busy these days! Hopefully I can crank out something that’s not so simplistic by the end of the month. Today’s vector is a simple piggy bank.
